Each day we start by remembering something positive and fun that happened the day before! It may be something as simple a fun story or a friend in our class using their power wheel chair for the 1st time. It's the little things that make life greater!
I work for an amazing school where kids with disabilities are no different than kids without.
I have a very diverse group of 1st Graders. I teach an inclusion classroom, I have kids that are orthopedically impaired (in wheel chairs), kids that are on the Autism Spectrum, kids with an array of learning disabilities and kids with no disabilities at all. The great thing about all of them is that they are all the same. The only things defining these kids are their wonderful imaginations and their abilities to use what they have to achieve any goal they set!
My Project
I am requesting an easel that all of the kids in my classroom can access. Most times we do activities where I want the kids to write or circle or draw and with the white boards in my room on the wall it makes difficult for most of my kiddos to reach or maneuver their wheelchairs around so that they can participate. A shorter easel that is mobile will help all the kids be able to take part in our activities. This will give each child the chance to really be an interactive part of our lessons.
For my classroom to have this easel will mean that my students who are orthopedically impaired or height challenged will have the same accessibility to interactive participation in anything I teach using the easel which is 80% of the time.
Providing kids with the opportunity to be an active part of the lesson will help them connect and retain the information they are learning. It will also help to keep them engaged and make learning fun which will make it memorable!
