In our highly diverse urban school, our students represent over 30 nations. Over 60% of the student body are economically disadvantaged, more than 75% have high needs and nearly 60% of the students do not speak English as their first language. Even so, miracles happen every day. As the music directors, our goal is to prepare them to be musically literate, passionate about music and appreciative citizens within their community. Above all, we want our students to be able to contribute as musicians, in civic, social, and worship organizations, according to their wishes and lifestyles.
Regardless of the challenges that our students face, when they come to music class, they are given a space and medium to help them rise above their daily struggles.
Most of our band students have been playing their instruments for two or three years before reaching high school. This is the first choral experience for many of our choir members.
With your donation, you have the power to be a miracle worker and provide both support and opportunity that otherwise would not exist in our underfunded arts program.
My Project
Very few of our students receive feedback from anyone other than ourselves. By performing for the judges at this competition, students will receive critiques from highly respected professionals in music. The students will be validated for their hard work and achievement and will improve through the suggestions given by the adjudicators. The cost for bus transportation is not provided in urban schools. Being able to go to the competition will be a precious opportunity for our students.
For all of our students, this will be a musically impactful trip, but for some, it may be life changing!
In addition to receiving feedback from judges, students will also get a rare opportunity to hear other ensembles and musical performances by peers from other districts. This will allow them to broaden their concept of musicianship and ability as it applies to their age group. It is our hope that they will make life-long memories and grow from this trip!
