My Students

I have the privilege of teaching 30 eager and excited first grade learners! My school is starting the school year digitally in order to ensure the health and safety of the students and staff. My school is committed to educating the whole child wherever they may be learning from. Although distance learning will be a challenge, I am confident we will still build a solid, caring community where risks are taken and trying your best is encouraged. First grade is a pivotal year in a child's educational foundation. Learning to read is a major goal for all of my students this year. I am very excited to welcome my new group of learners in the next few weeks and watch them grow in so many ways this year.

My Project

Our school year will begin with all of my first graders receiving instruction online from home. It is my desire to provide my students with materials they can not only access digitally, but also have rich reading opportunities I can send home weekly with topics to better understand the world around them. Scholastic news is a fantastic resource to teach students text features, determining importance in non fiction text, and features timely topics that students can relate to which supplements our science and social studies standards. I intend to send the magazines home weekly and work with small groups online to practice reading, clarify information, and teach the non fiction text features necessary for students to be more proficient in comprehending and organizing non fiction texts.

By funding my project, you not only will give my students the gift of learning to read non fiction texts, but also provide additional reading materials to supplement our language arts program so that I can reach students at varying levels of reading proficiency.

The Teachers Pay Teachers materials will connect to our district's language arts program so that students can practice phonics sounds, deepen comprehension skills, develop spelling competency, and increase fluency with materials purchased that can be adapted digitally. I will also supplement our writing program with more materials I can use digitally so students can practice editing and grammar skills in an engaging way. There are also great interactive games that can be used to further instill phonics and sight word competency that can be part of my language arts program for students to access online. My aim is to provide a balanced literacy program even though my students and I can't be physically together to learn.
