My students need a selection of floor seating as the old bean bag furniture has fallen apart. The students love this classroom and the opportunity to sit in bean bags! The Merax furniture is their favorite!
CRLS is a school in the heart of Cambridge, MA where we celebrate adversity, diversity and respect. . I teach Wellness for freshmen students.
It is really important to me that the students are in a comfortable environment while they are learning, an environment that de-stresses them, and provides them with a change from their other classroom experiences throughout the day.
I have a beautiful rug, aroma therapy, salt lamps, and many lamps around the room to provide softer lighting for the students. Most of the students race to class to grab one of the bean bag chairs. Unfortunately after 3 years of good use, they are starting to fall apart.
Students love the feel of being on the floor, in a bean bag comfortably learning. There is one couch the students RUSH to get to class over.. It's incredible watching the students sprint down the hallway and into my classroom.
When asking students to look inward and discuss emotions, sexuality, and stress management I believe a comfortable environment with the freedom to move around will motivate them to share out in small group conversations, and to settle in and focus.
My Project
The materials will make a difference for the students in many ways.
1.
The students really enjoy coming to a classroom that is different, a classroom where they don't have to sit in a desk and chair with the lights on brightly.
2. The students RACE to class to be here first, sometimes they show up 30 minutes early to school just to secure their favorite beanbag chair!
3. The students are provided with a comfortable environment where they are able to focus on the lesson because they are comfortable enough to.
4. The students get to stretch their legs a bit and change up their posture throughout the day.
5. It provides students with a feeling of freedom! This is probably one of the most important for me as a teacher, the students feel they are already respected and honored in a different way simply because of a teacher trying to provide them with a space to be comfortable. This is what means the most to me, that they know that they deserve this. They are among the most stressed out population in the entire world, and you could be a part of what changes that.
