My Project
At the Oklahoma Library Association Annual Conference, I was lucky enough to win a virtual author visit from Torrey Maldonado. Unfortunately, our library collection is not equipped with all of Maldonado's texts, nor do we have enough to go around. It is imperative that students have the opportunity to read Maldonado's books before he arrives via our BenQ screen.
Reaching male, middle school readers sometimes feels impossible; however, it is imperative we provide programming and events targeted towards these students.
We can not give up on our male students, especially our Black male students. Torrey Maldonado's relatability is primary to this grant's success. His novels regarding racism, emotional intelligence, and allyship are necessary for students to see themselves in literature.
Providing enough copies of Maldonado's novels will allow students to read his work before the author visits and supply students with books to discuss with their peers, teachers, and Maldonado himself. This author visit advocates for a strong culture of reading, for every reader -- not just the ones who are eager to browse our shelves.
