My students need a shorter basketball goal to use during our basketball unit, because they are too little to shoot at the ten foot goal.

My Students

Can you imagine a 6 year old child trying to shoot a basketball into a 10 foot goal ? My school cannot use portable goals that drop down to lower heights anymore because of safety issues, so my elementary age children (4 - 12 years old) are stuck with regulation 10 foot goals to use.

My students are elementary age, pre - Kindergarten to 4th grade.

My students live in a poor economic area and funds are scarce for our public school. Most of my students are not allowed outside because of the dangers in the community, so our physical education program is vital to most of our kids. My students love the game of basketball and are very successful with our basketball unit.

My Project

My basketball unit is the most popular and successful of my physical education units. In the past, our students had the opportunity to use lower basketball goals, which makes the game more fun than hurling the basketball at a ten foot goal with no success. Obtaining these resources will help my students succeed and have a positive effect on their confidence. With this confidence, some join after school and weekend basketball programs, which keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

Our basketball unit is so important to my students, most love it, and all will be successful.

The inspiration they get from this success will hopefully lead to success and confidence in not only my class, but all their classes. Some of my students have even gone on to play junior high and high school sports, and for some, this keeps them in school and not dropping out.
