Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students currently reside in Boston, MA. However, they have traveled thousands of miles in hope for a high quality education and a journey that will lead to nothing short of success and endless opportunities. Like all educators, I want the best for my students. They truly deserve it. They are courageous, motivated, determined, strong-willed individuals that bring so much joy to our class.
So many memories of students entering the classroom after a 5:30 am wake-up, over an hour bus ride, or after days of being in an entire new country ready to absorb everything their little hearts desire.
As much as our students admire us, WE (their teachers) are some of their biggest supporters. Every day my students never fail to amaze me.
My classroom consists of about fifty percent newcomers. Acquiring a second language can be challenging, but they are determined to work hard, practice, ask questions, and apply what they already know to deepen their understanding of what's being taught.
My Project
The materials that I selected will foster a love for reading and help support my first graders build their reading muscles from start to finish! By the end of first grade we would like our students to be able to read for twenty minutes independently.
This year, students are grappling with more complex texts and they are encouraged to lead discussions with their peers.
A colored printer will support the creation of vivid anchor charts and visuals to build background knowledge and deepen their understanding of the content. Lastly, I want students to feel comfortable as they are enjoying a good book! Including a cozy corner in our classroom library will create a space where students can comfortably read texts that they find interesting!
I want my students to learn to read, but most importantly I want them to grow a love for reading that will open so many doors in their future. More than 80 percent of students enter my class reading below grade level. Engaging texts, texts that all students can access, supportive anchor charts with visuals, and conversations about good books will help ALL students meet their reading goals.
