I am a 7th grade teacher at a Title One school with a mission to "see every scholar to and through college." I have made this mission my calling and seek every opportunity to help my scholars be successful. My scholars keep me on my toes. They are curious and inquisitive and they are highly energetic. In fact, their "energy" can be a little overwhelming sometimes. However, they stay engaged and work hard to actualize our shared vision.
The 7th grade year can be a challenging one due to the multitude of physical, social, and emotional needs of this age group.
Donors Choose has been a great partner in helping me meet the needs of these scholars. Together we can make lasting change in their lives, and help these students become successful in the classroom and in life. While it may be a challenging year, it is still a fun and exciting opportunity. My scholars make me laugh everyday and I love being there, as we embark on this journey of discovery and growth.
We have high expectations for scholars in the 7th grade. Each week to celebrate scholars that had a successful week, we have a Friday activity called "Fun Friday." This event includes interactive games, music, and social time. We use a system called "scholar dollars" where scholars can gain and lose dollars based on their behaviors throughout the week. Every Friday, scholars receive what is called a "paycheck." Currently, the only use of the paycheck is to identify those who qualify for Fun Friday and who doesn't. There is no further reward that allows us to recognize scholars who are exhibiting high achievement each and every week. We will be using the items in this project to create a prize box for our scholars.
The Recognize and Reward Box will provide an incentive for our scholars to continue to meet our high academic standards each and every week.
Much like a regular paycheck, scholars will be encouraged to earn as many scholar dollars as possible and save their dollars to purchase an item from the box. It is important to us to honor scholars meeting our expectations and this is another way to do just that.
