Help me give my students the supplies they need to get a head start and motivate them to go off to college, such as backpacks, whiteboards, water bottles, markers and post-its.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help motivate the graduating class of 2019! Our students are highly motivated, but are afraid to venture out of their area. They feel the pressure from their community and family to stay within the area. Many of them give up UC and Private- out of state colleges to go to a community college due to the fear of leaving. We want to turn that fear into a positive, through the help of the Michelle Obama #bettermakeroomproject. We want every student to know that going off to college is important and that it is okay to take a leap of faith. My students are smart, bright and caring young adults. They just need the extra motivation and support to leave their hometown and take the next step into their future and go off to college. We are are hosting a Signing Day Party for our Seniors that are planning to attend a post-secondary education. We want them to feel proud that that they are going off to college. Last year, 77% had the aspiration to go to college. Only 44% actually attended a 4-year University. My goal this year is to celebrate 50% of our students going to college.
My Project
Having supplies and making your dorm room feel like home is a big part of going off to college. By providing the students with the essentials for their transition, it will relieve them of the stress of not being prepared and will provide them the opportunity to make their room their own. I want to make their transition to a Post Secondary, 4 year University an exciting experience. At our Signing Day party, we will be raffling off prizes to the students. As part of this special event, students would have to agree to attend a post-secondary college to take part in the lunchtime activities. Proof of their acceptance will be asked for.
