My students love to read! They come from various backgrounds but they all share the love of reading. We need a variety of higher level books for my students to continue to grow. I have a wide range of books but I need more to challenge them. With the number of students in my classes, my higher level books are being checked out very quickly. Therefore, many are settling on easier books since that is what they can get their hands on.
My school is a true neighborhood school.
All students live within a 2 mile radius of the school. Some walk, ride bikes, skateboard or get dropped off by car. Approximately 25% of the students come from military families. We have an Anchor for Life program at our school to help the transition for military students moving. We also have 35% of the students come from low income families.
My Project
Reading can be boring to many students. As a grade level, we are trying to find books that will interest the students, create conversation and make them ask questions. Fantasy tends to catch their interest but they need to reach beyond that genre.
Learning about the vast accomplishments of one woman in history could be beneficial towards my students setting their own goals in life.
Amelia did what many people said could not be done but especially because she was a woman. She did not allow this to keep her down. I want my students to see that there may be setbacks and struggles but you must continue pushing forward and reach for the stars.
