Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach a wonderful curriculum that engages students with interactive technology on the smart screen in my classroom, but not all of my students can reach the board! I teach students of all ages and mobilities and younger students, shorter students, and students who use wheelchairs are unable to reach high enough to engage with the touch screen.

All students, regardless of height or mobility, should have access to the same level of class engagement as their peers.

It may not seem like a big deal to an adult if you get a turn to come up to the interactive board and place a music note or select an instrument sound, but to young students it is! Young children get very excited when it is their turn to choose or activate something on the board and they all want to be able to reach it and do it themselves. The long stool is perfect for students who just need a few extra inches, or if that is not quite enough they can use one of the smaller hand pointers to reach that little bit higher. The size and shape of the stool will not block access for wheelchair users. Students using wheelchairs will be able to roll up close to the board and touch it with one of the extra long hand pointers. Having different size hand pointers and the stool permanently in position will make it easy and comfortable for all students to access the board with no stigma attached. I am sure the hand pointers will be so much fun that even students who don't need them will want to use them, making them commonplace for everyone.

Help all my students reach the board!
