Our student population is 63% Low socioeconomic with 60 below and well below reading benchmarks. They are 25% English language learners. We need to make the difference for our students and help them succeed.
I focus closely with the most at-risk students in a small group setting to help close the gap.
The kindergarten students are trying to learn all the letters and sounds and to blend them into words. The 1st and 2nd graders are working on vowel patterns to increase fluency and comprehension. By 3rd grade, I still service very at-risk students focusing on spelling patterns and syllabic word work. They also need to become more fluent readers and increase their comprehension.
About 50% of our students are well below benchmark goals in reading. Research shows that students never catch up if they are not reading on grade level by third grade. Closing the gap for these at-risk students will give them opportunities for the rest of their lives.
My Project
Students make the best gains in reading by having multiple exposures to text on their instructional level. This leveled library along with the magnetic white boards, used for word building and writing, will increase fluency as well.
Explicit and systematic instruction for our at-risk population will help close the gap for students with reading difficulties.
Instruction begins with phonemic awareness and alphabet naming and sounds. As students learn to blend words, they need to practice with words embedded into real text for fluency and comprehension. These materials will give more leveled texts to increase student success.
