Re-Mapping the World: Centering Justice and Culture in Geography

Help me give my students an accurate view of the world in geography class by challenging outdated ideas through Lotería, collaborative mapmaking, and a Gall-Peters map that re-centers Indigenous, African, and Latinx voices.

My Project

My 7th grade students will begin a cross-curricular, project-based unit next fall exploring the question: How do shared spaces help build and support community? In collaboration with their ELA, math, and science teachers, they will examine how geography, identity, and access to space shape the communities we live in—and who is included or excluded. This project provides the tools to explore those ideas through a justice-focused lens, with materials that highlight historically marginalized voices from Indigenous, African, and Latinx communities.

My incoming 7th graders are high-achieving students in a rural Title I school who deserve learning experiences that reflect their voices, cultures, and potential.

The Gall-Peters map will help students examine traditional distortions in world geography. Games like Lotería and MAPOMINOES will make learning about culture and place hands-on and memorable. Books such as Africa Is Not a Country, We Are Still Here!, Separate Is Never Equal, and Yes! We Are Latinos will expose students to voices often missing from textbooks. Chart paper, markers, and headphones will support student-driven research, group mapping projects, and multimedia learning. With your support, my students will move beyond memorizing maps to become thoughtful, inclusive learners who understand the power of place, voice, and perspective.
