My Project

Our school has partnered with the University of Washington's special education research team to bring the intervention Remaking Recess to our school. A key part of this intervention involves targeting specific students who are typically isolated from peers and bringing their interests to the fore. In this case, we are focusing on increasing the social skills of students who love to play with building materials and are learning to play collaborative games. When these materials are present on the playground, students are drawn into the action and increased social opportunities abound.

The ultimate outcome of this program is that increased play = increased belonging at school and, ultimately, improved academic outcomes for students.

This year our goal is to target individuals who are interested in building and collaborative games, but will typically do so away from peers. We will use these materials to facilitate and grow social interactions and conversations.

Our school has a high special education population and, as a result, our staff are knowledgeable about and interested in growing their use of evidence-based practices. Recess is a challenging time for students with social-behavior needs. By directly targeting this time and infusing it with adult support and evidence-based practice we can improve the lives of our students.
