This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school is in a culturally-diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.

Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere.

We are working to ensure that the Media Center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their multiple literacy goals.

My Project

This has been a challenging year for all of us, but especially for students. Stuck at home for the bulk of the year, many students were not able to check out physical library books and relied heavily on our collection of e-readers. Providing a station in the media center with an e-reader would allow the students who fell in love with this format to continue enjoying e-books when they return to in-person learning!

Not only does having an e-reader allow students to develop their traditional literacy skills, but it will also support their digital literacy development as well!

Combining technology with reading will spark interest in books for students who previously felt uninspired by the traditional book format. Not only that, but an e-reader allows the library to expand our collection exponentially, increasing our students' access to diverse works that represent the diversity present in our school and our world.

Lastly, this station would be an excellent resource for some of our most vulnerable readers- Exceptional Children (EC) and English Language Learners (ELL). Kids with special education needs benefit from electronic readers because they provide "text to speech" options. This technology will help students with decoding, comprehension, and fluency. Highlighting text while reading will allow students to follow along with, and lets them see and hear words at the same time. They can even click a word that is unfamiliar to instantly see its definition. Thank you for considering supporting these students!
