My Students

Do you remember learning to count? As a toddler, you began counting toes and fingers. Perhaps you were read number such as 1,2, Buckle My Shoe, 3 Little Pigs, or 5 Little Ducks. This is how you discovered number sense in your little world. Many did not hear books. Exposure to numbers is important!

Our class is composed of 19, Kindergarten students in a Title I, urban school.

They are energetic and their favorite thing is learning to count! From the first day of school, we begin counting by 1's to 10; adding 10 as we continue getting to 100 by the 100th day of school. We add counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. We use calendar time for numbers, add and subtract. They know the importance that I place on math number sense, so we eagerly count as we walk to recess everyday! However, many students cannot count to 3 at the beginning of school. They have not had opportunities to hear number stories read aloud on the computer, with the majority not having a home computer. They have not done matching numbers to objects or use a counting line as we do on our 2 old desktop computers. Our computers are in an area where they have "connections," and inconvenient to use for whole class instruction. We need a Math center laptop, where stories, counting objects, and counting numbers can inspire us!

My Project

A new computer laptop will make our Math Center come alive. We can access math websites and programs to meet individualized learning needs.Math-focused sites can introduce basic math skills of counting, shapes, numbers, addition, etc. Additional math worksheets can be sent home. This promotes an effective home-school connection. Parents work on these skills with their child and siblings. Research shows when these skills are reinforced, especially by the caregiver, then concepts are retained. These lifelong skills are the building blocks for future learning. When we have a "portable" laptop, I can move it to teach whole group lessons, and introduce concepts that they can work on in the Math center. High-tech computers allow us to run programs that our old ones can not. When giving students remediation and accelerated learning opportunities, students see themselves as growing Mathematicians! Einstein said, "It's not that I'm smart; I stay with problems longer." We will stay in math!

Our school has been given a "D" rating by the State from our achievement tests.

Overall,45% made learning gains on the Math; Science only 39% achieved mastery on State tests. When we have effective tools: accessible computers for math, with quality instruction, students will learn and retain the concepts at an early age for lifelong math learning! Boas said, "You make math seem like fun. If it isn't fun, why do it?" Razzle Dazzle Math will urge students explore math and stay in fun Math centers!
