Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During the 2009-2010 school year, I'll be teaching language arts to an amazing group of 7th grade gifted students. We are an urban school in a high-need community. Our school is considered a Title One school, which means that a majority of our students are on free and reduced lunch.
In order for students to excel in reading and writing, they must be immersed in a print rich classroom. Students must also be allowed the opportunity for choice. Reading isn't fun unless you're reading a book you love!
I need as many books as possible to allow my students the freedom to choose what they want to read. AKJ Books is making the daunting task of creating a classroom library much easier by grouping young adult literature together and selling them in pre-made libraries. With these resources, my students will begin to foster the love of reading, which will ultimately lead to success in their academics across the board.
With your help, I will be able to provide my students with a print rich classroom, in which they will feel free and safe to read. You will make it possible for my students to excel in school, and you will begin to create a love of reading in 110 seventh grade students.
