My students need a classroom library that allows access to a wide variety of reading materials, including books, periodicals, and literacy learning tubs.
Do you remember when you first hitched on to the idea of reading for enjoyment? My students need help finding their reading niche! By having a well equipped classroom library, all students will have access to meaningful texts and books they find personally interesting.
Third graders in my classroom are expected to sustain independent silent reading for at least twenty minutes per day as part of their literacy block.
These developing readers choose from a small classroom library consisting of mostly fiction books. With 10 boys and 7 girls in my classroom, all with varying reading levels, our library needs a wider range of available text to make the most of their independent reading time!
My Project
Our current classroom library is mainly comprised of fiction picture and chapter books. As shown in the Scholastic article Classroom Libraries Work: Research and Results, "By providing access to a rich classroom library, teachers promote greater amounts of reading, increased reading frequency, and more diverse reading experiences among their students, thus helping them to attain greater levels of reading achievement." With the addition of nonfiction books, poetry, and current event news articles, I will be able to enhance these budding readers' success.
My ultimate goal is to share my passion for reading with my students and help them become lifelong readers.
This project will help make sure no reader is left behind. A "great book" means different things to different readers. With this enhanced classroom library every child will find what a great book means to them!
