"Is that all the Naruto books you have?" "Do you have Dragon Ball Super, vol. 30? "Any new graphic novels?" These are just a few of the questions I've heard from students lately. When they start asking me about books I don't have, the insecurity that I imagine all librarians feel about not having enough books -- or the right kind of books -- kicks into overdrive.
Having books that students have asked for can have a profound impact on their love for reading and learning.
Of course, it can enhance their motivation to read. But also, by having access to books they have requested, kids feel empowered and valued, knowing that their preferences are being acknowledged. This can boost their confidence, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Moreover, it fosters a sense of independence and autonomy, which can lead to a lifelong love of reading and continuous self-advocacy.
