Rare Series Books for Avid Emergent Readers!

My students need and deserve more series books that are on their reading levels which are not at our school. Nothing excites readers more than characters they can follow over time and multiple books.

My Students

My students live in Wards 7 and 8 in Washington, DC. This is an impoverished area, but my students refuse to let that be a determinant of their future. In my classroom, the students are seven- and eight-year-olds with a range of learning and/or social-emotional disabilities. The typical student reads at a first-grade level; they need to be surrounded by a classroom library that supports their needs.

My students show up every day with a smile, dedicated to growing in reading and writing, no matter how difficult the task.

They are excited by their growth as readers, eagerly working toward reading chapter books with the ease. They can and will get there by immersing themselves in books at their current level and pushing their comprehension strategies.

My Project

This project consists of several series books - Messy Bessey, Fox, Henry and Mudge, and a Guided Reading Collection - that are on my students' reading levels. Series books are incredibly important for emergent readers. They invest in the main characters of the series and chart the character developments across various books. Reading series books allow students to do critical thinking about character traits, character emotions, and character growth. These skills will help them grow reading levels quickly, getting closer to closing the achievement gap.

My students deserve the opportunity to find a series that they love, characters who become their best friends.

I've witnessed them fall in love with Dear Dragon, Gossie and her friends, Little Critter and as a result, grow two or more reading levels in just under 3 months! Let's do it again with series books on higher reading levels and a Guided Reading Collection.
