Ramp Up the Read Aloud

Help me give my students opportunities to improve their literacy skills as a distance (online) learner or as a traditional face to face student.

My Students

My classroom is full of 5th graders who are eager to learn and succeed. Even though all these students are the same age, their skills and needs greatly differ. I teach in Utah, a state that is known to have high numbers of students in each classroom. Not only do I have high numbers in my class, but I also have a diverse group of learners. I have students functioning well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students functioning well above grade level. I have students who have a passion for learning, and some who are disconnected from academics. My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds; many students are English Language Learners. To compound challenges, many students are economically disadvantaged.

My Project

This school year is like none other! I have a third of my students learning from home and the rest in the classroom with me. In the past few years, I have seen the power of a carefully picked read aloud and the power it has to increase engagement and literacy skills. A book read aloud levels the playing field for all students and allows all students to practice reading and comprehension strategies. These same books can serve as mentor texts when teaching kids the author's craft.

These carefully picked books will be added to my growing library and will be used as read alouds to engage each student and allow each student to practice and refine literacy skills.

The books and Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will provide meaningful and engaging literacy lessons for both my online and face to face students.
