My students are constantly begging me to take them on a field trip, and trust me I have been looking for something that ties into our curriculum but it's not always as easy as you think it will be. I teach fourth grade on the south-side of Chicago to a class of 18 students who all receive free lunches. Taking a field trip is not so easy when your class does not have the money to make it happen. I found a flyer for a Theatreworks production of Ramona Quimby at a venue right near our school. Not only would this be an amazing experience for my students because many of them have never had the chance to see live acting and singing, but Ramona by Beverly Cleary is a favorite book in my classroom. My students easily relate to the smart-alecky, often mischievous little girl who is close to their age. I would love the opportunity to take my kids to see this musical production because it would open their eyes to the ways in which books can be portrayed, and it would give them a potentially once in a lifetime opportunity to attend the theatre without worrying about how much it might cost. In order to go on this wonderful field trip, I would need money to pay for a bus, as well as money to pay for a ticket for each of my students. Once again, not only do I think this would be a wonderful cultural experience for my students, but it would connect amazingly with the literacy program that I have in place in our classroom. By seeing a novel put on as a musical my students would get to be a part of a literacy-rich experience that they will never forget.
