Have you ever felt a deep connection with a character in a novel? Ralph S. Mouse is just that character to connect with my 3rd graders. I would like to bring Beverly Cleary’s The Ralph Mouse trilogy to every third grader at our school.
My students are eager learners who are dramatically effected by the characters within the novels they read.
Beverly Cleary touches all children with her books about a mouse who only lonely children can understand and the adventures and troubles that he encounters in life.
My Project
Every successful reading program requires teachers to read aloud to children on a regular basis. A child who can follow along in their own book as the teacher reads aloud, learns new language patterns, story structure, and vocabulary. Children love to follow along in their own copy while a teacher reads. Story sharing creates far-reaching benefits for the listener. With a copy of the novel in my students' hands, they'll be able to improve their reading and vocabulary skills as well as deepen their love of literature.
Once the students have completed reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle, Runaway Ralph, and Ralph S.
Mouse, they will be asked to compare and contrast the rising and falling action of each book, the changes in setting, and character growth within each novel. Literary response and analysis lead to better reading comprehension which will be achieved through the use of Venn Diagrams, Rising/Falling Action Charts, and student predictions throughout the reading.
