This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us raise our levels! My students want to become better readers and increase their reading levels. We need books at THEIR level to do it!
I have a class of 32 second graders, with various reading levels.
Most of them are struggling readers. They come from high poverty, Spanish speaking homes. The lack of resources and parental control, make it difficult for them to expand their learning outside of the classroom. Every student’s goal is an independent reading increase of 4-5 levels by the end of the year. In order to do this I'm trying to build a classroom library, with readers of all levels. So my students can check books out, and take them home.
My Project
Achieving grade level is extremely crucial in the Second grade. Next year my students will be taking standardized tests, that will not be modified to fit their needs. They will be required to read third grade material, no matter what their reading level is. Due to large class size and situations at home, my students need books they can read confidently and with MINIMAL assistance. Books that allow them to apply strategies they learn during small and whole group instruction.
Our current classroom library is beyond the comprehension level of most of my students. This Project would donate 110 leveled readers to my students. By donating to our project, you would be putting books into the hands of excited and eager readers. Helping us attain our goal!!
This is important to me because the mission of my charter school is “to fulfill the promise of public education by proving that all children can achieve academic success, regardless of their income level or ethnicity”.
I have the drive and my students know the expectation; we lack the resources. Gaining access to leveled readers, my students would be able to continue the learning that takes place in the classroom at home!
Please help me keep that promise to my students!
