My students need basic supplies, such as pencils and notebooks, a printer along with ink and paper, and an ELMO to aid in their learning and differentiated instruction.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Failure is not an option because success is the only option".
Teaching is a hard occupation especially when you teach in a low income community where students come with low mathematical foundations, no school supplies, and limit resources available in the schools to aid in their learning.
My students come from a Title I South Bronx Middle School, which is a part of the Renewal Program.
Most of the students receive free lunch and enter 6th grade with 1's and 2's on the Mathematics State Test. The students I serve are in both general education and special education classrooms. My students come from all different types of home life, such as foster homes, shelters, and broken home with feuding parents, which is shown in their school work. The students come to school with a lack of stability and structure, which results in students frequently coming to school late, absent, or without school supplies and complete school work.
My Project
The materials my students need are basic school supplies, such as notebooks and pencils because many of them come to school with no tools to aid in their learning. Pencils and notebooks are important in their quest to learn because they can digest the material through taking notes and are able to practice and build their skills through exercises and problem solving. Since resources are scarce, students are forced to share worksheets. This can be difficult since many students don’t like to share. A printer would allow each student to have their own handout to work on and keep for studying. It would also help save instructional time by giving printed handouts for homework instead of having the students copy down the problems for homework. An ELMO would also be an excellent tool to help my special education students get a deeper understanding through visual aids.
My goal as a teacher is to build and strengthen my students math skills and improve their test scores so that they may be successful.
These materials will make a big difference in aiding my students learning inside the classroom. It will provide them with the needed tools for their success and deepen their understanding of mathematics. It will also help build their confidence in math and in themselves, which may have been severely damaged throughout the years of getting low test scores.
