Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Analyzing our test scores, my colleagues and I noticed that our second grade students were usually successful in grammar, but fared poorly on reading comprehension. As we reflected on our teaching, we realized that our program didn't address most of the questions that appeared on the end of the year state test.
My public school struggles to offer the best to our kids who come from economically disadvantaged families. 75% of our students are African American alongside with Latin and Asian children. This situation offers unlimited opportunities to learn tolerance and team work while discovering new perspectives. However, our school and our families can't afford the sources we need to support academic knowledge and significantly improve student achievement.
Class sets of particular books will help all students to raise their reading comprehension test scores. The two class sets I ordered, "Anansi and the Talking Melon" from the African folklore and "Flossie and the Fox," from the African-American folklore, will enable students to compare and contrast story lines, traditions, and tricksters.
Children will love to read (and re-read) these books you will offer them as this new literature relate to the culture of the class and open their world. We will finally be able to discuss myths and tricksters that appear so often in literature and tests!
