This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The world has quickly become dependent on technology and I want my students to enter high school, college, and the work force prepared. Adding laptops to our classroom would give them the opportunity to learn about and explore everything the Internet has to offer in a safe environment.
I teach a 6th grade class in a New York City public school.
Though I have not yet met this class, every year I am pleasantly surprised by the diverse personalities and unique talents and interests in front of me. Our school is classified as a Title I school and many of our students do not have access to technology at home. I want my classroom to be equipped with adequate technology in order to give my students unique learning experiences that meet their diverse needs and interests.
My Project
I am requesting two laptops. Every year the 6th grade completes several research projects where students choose their own topics and develop papers after extensive research. These projects are extremely important because the skills they develop are ones they will continue to use throughout their lives. Unfortunately, without adequate technology, this becomes extremely difficult. I do not want to limit topics to ones on which I have materials because when the topic interests them, the research is much more meaningful. However, it is difficult for students to obtain adequate information when they do not have access to technology at home and have limited access at school. Every year these projects seem to be more difficult than necessary. Adding two laptops to our classroom would allow me to set up a research center where students can take turns researching their topics. This would greatly assist in making these projects more manageable and effective.
My ultimate goal as a teacher is to have every student leave my room more prepared to succeed in the world around them.
