Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with bilingual students with a great amount of energy and curiosity. They are eager to learn and love technology.
Last year they used computer reading programs that helped them to increased fluency, comprehension and has exposed them to a totally new world.
Now they have goals and high expectations for themselves.
Many of my students read phonetically but they struggle a lot with understanding what they are reading.
Some are not reading at grade level. They have scare vocabulary and very little exposure to current events and enrichment activities. All of these make comprehension very difficult for most of them. Reading skills like: main idea, inference and drawing conclusions are the most difficult areas for my students.
For many of my students, the school is the only place they are exposed to literature based material and technology.
We are a Title 1 school and my students are 100% Hispanic and on free/reduced lunch. Nevertheless, they have a genuine desire to succeed.
My Project
I have 2 computers and my teacher iPad which we share in our classroom. Using the specific reading software has made rapid changes in my students, But we need more technology available for them. I am requesting 2 mini i pads because most of my students do not have computer or internet at home. this means that the only chance they get to practice is at school. I have seen that students who consistently use the reading software improve in a month. Their fluency doubles, their comprehension thrives and they are motivated to continue learning.
By helping my students improve their reading comprehension they will have a better chance to succeed in life.
They will practice daily and will develop reading strategies that will build the skills for close reading gaps. According to research my students' Lexile level will double by completing two lesson per week.
