Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students from my school live in one of the highest inner-city poverty areas in the entire nation. Most of our students struggle every day but we laugh and love and share gratitude for every moment we have together. Other students are English language learners who survive day-to-day and view coming to this public school as a positive way to escape their otherwise less than satisfactory lives. Others don't even have homes to go home to. Covid has hit these kids and these families hard. We're all going through so much just to keep afloat, but we have survived.

These are all great people.

I am privileged to work with and for some of the best people, I've ever met. I've seen all of us go over and above for each other and each of our students every single day. We provide students with access to after-school programs, necessary technology, often even basic daily living materials, and even with major budget cuts, global pandemics, and lots and lots of heroic parents who are essential workers. I've never been more proud of the students we are helping to cultivate. This generation is watching, learning, and stepping carefully into their future.

My Project

These instruments will be kept sacred and brought out to help facilitate moments of attention, presence, and just general communion with and for each other. They will be utilized by me, our music teacher, parent coordinator, and other teachers and staff to help heal and connect our beautiful learning community again. Our hope is to start off some facility meetings with these, teach our teachers to facilitate small drum circles, and encourage them to use these to foster healing, attention, and presence on their own. We hope this will permeate our school help promote our diverse backgrounds, clarity, and general vibrations overall.
