Raising a LOTl Baby Axolotls in Our Science Class!

Help me give my students the materials to raise our own axolotls and feed the hatchlings with baby brine shrimp! This is a classroom community hands-on science learning experience that my junior scientists will remember for their lifetime!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our adult pet axolotls laid over 150 eggs, and our Science class is hatching them and raising them! Students are learning all of the steps to raise the live food that the hatchlings eat, and how to care for them. Students will raise them until they are old enough to go home to families who would like to keep them as pets.

Imagine the scientific engagement of students raising their OWN axolotl from an egg and getting to keep it as their very own pet!

(With parent permission of course!) So far, the axolotl eggs have hatched, and we are starting to raise baby brine shrimp for the hatchling food. Baby axolotls have a very picky diet and students are learning and leading the efforts on running the brine shrimp hatchery, and planning for everything their babies will need. The materials in this project mostly comprise the food and infrastructure these babies need! There are A LOT of new mouths to feed.

Dilworth is a Title 1 middle school, and my students don't often get the chance to have exposure to such unique and exciting lab experiences. This is a hands-on life science project that they will remember for their lifetime!
