This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in a very dense, urban immigrant community, where my students are often balancing multiple lives simultaneously — that of school, home, and the neighborhood; that of American life, alongside their family's important cultural ties to their homelands. My students work hard and are super eager to learn new skills and ideas.
The longer that I have had the privilege to work in such a community, the more I see the importance and necessity of providing my students with as many opportunities as I can for hands-on, exploratory opportunities that can be challenging to come by in such a densely populated neighborhood.
I love being able to take them out into the world, into nature, and to explore the environment that exists beyond the boundaries of our school's surrounding blocks. In the classroom, I try to continue this exploration by providing creative outlets that are difficult to access outside of school.
My Project
This project aims to purchase a Honeywell large-space air purifier and two packs of replacement filters. While these materials aren't the most "fun", they are going to be essential as we return to in-person learning in a COVID-19 world, and with wildfire season around the corner.
My goal with this project is very simple: to keep the air in my classroom as ventilated and clean as possible for my young students.
The return to in-person learning this upcoming fall, while an exciting time for students to reunite and take joy in the classroom community once again, also brings its own challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. At this point, all of the science shows that clean and ventilated air create the safest conditions. My hope is to fund this project as a way to add an additional layer of protection and safety for my students as they make this return.
The air purifier (which is specifically made for large spaces, such as a classroom) would give me, my students, and their families extra peace of mind to know that we have this on and working in the classroom throughout the day, in addition to our other health measures - not only due to the pandemic, but also the likelihood of another upcoming fire season. The two additional filter packs are to ensure that I can clean and update the purifier throughout the year as needed, and to continue to provide clean and ventilated air for my amazing students as we navigate this challenging year. While this may not be the most glamorous project to post, it is something essential to feel ready for this upcoming year, and want to thank you in advance for taking that into consideration.
