Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students, like all of us, have been through a lot in the past three years. Through it all, they have kept working towards their future. In fact, students in my district have test scores higher than they were before the pandemic. This year, in addition to the curriculum I am required to teach, I want to give them more keys to unlocking literature: the language of symbols and archetypes. We will discuss how symbols are very open to interpretation, but archetypes tend to show up across cultures. Since my students are all bilingual and come from many different cultures, it will be fun to compare classic stories from Mexico, Afghanistan and other places and see how the hero's journey shows up regardless of your location.

The first symbol we will be learning about is rainbows, representing perserverance and hope for the future.

To get them ready for this concept, I have painted a rainbow mural on the wall outside our class, and assigned each group table a color of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Having colored paper and rainbow table baskets will emphasize this organization, both making it easier to keep track of classroom supplies and readying their brains to start thinking about symbols and archetypes at a level beyond what most middle schoolers understand. Your contribution will help them on their own hero's journey towards understanding literature and the human experience.
