Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with 7th & 8th graders who elect to come to a weekly GSA group. We learn about history and current events that effect LGBTQ+ folks. We work on how to provide a safe space not only in our group, but school-wide.
Reading materials will be used for educating and experiencing the world through someones else's perspective.
Some of the books like "The Freedom to Be: Stories from Transgender Youth, Adult, and their Families" or Rainbow Revolution: Power, Pride, and Protest in the Fight for Queer Rights" will help us to show perspectives of folks in the queer community. The art supplies are used for self-care. I have found that allowing them to color helps when we are talking in a group. We also maintain a bulletin board in our building that we try to add something new to at least monthly.
"A Kids Book About Being Inclusive" will help the leaders of the group teach students how they can implement inclusiveness and compassion across the school. Measurement of success is students coming back weekly and when they bring other friends to the group. Keeping the bulletin board fresh, so that others can see that LGBTQ+ folks have a presence at our school.
