Have you ever seen a weather station up close? Usually weather stations are located on top of a building far away. How much fun would my students have if they took an anemometer outside to measure wind speed or collect rain from a rain gauge?
I teach a wonderful class of 4th grade students.
My students are full of curiosity and wonder. I know that my students need more of engaging tools to peak their wonder in Science and satisfy their curiosity. Our school was built a few years ago and I am still searching for science tools and equipment that fit our science core. The state legislators have made major cuts in education and our extra money to purchase these tools has been slashed. I know that my students would learn more about weather and how to forecast it with the appropriate equipment.
My Project
In the past, my students would look at a picture of a rain gauge, barometer or anemometer. That is really not engaging. My students would learn more about the weather if they could take these weather tools outside and see how these tool react to the weather. Students could record their observations and learn how to forecast future weather. The video will help them look for clues in their own weather outside and explain how extreme weather can develop. My goal is that my students will learn how weather works and be able to understand what a meteorologist tells them on the news. Then, they could impress their parents with their expertise in weather.
The great part of this grant is that it will effect my students this year, but my future students for years to come.
My students will be able to experience weather in a new and exciting way than by doing a worksheet or just watching a video. My students now and in the future will remember how thrilling it was to watch weather elements, make a prediction and see if their forecast is accurate.
