Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing! They learn academics daily and yet, have the drive and hunger to learn more by attending extra programs offered. They have an incredible desire to be active learners, expanding on what is taught in the classroom everyday.

I am able to provide an extra learning experience for many, beyond the regular curriculum learning in the classroom

My students represent a very diverse multi-cultural, socio economically disadvantaged community. Many are attending school for the first time in the United States. I love the fact that my students are bright-eyed and eager when they come to my class to learn.

My Project

With over fifty-one percent of our students being socio- economically disadvantaged, learning to sew and quilt in this extra program, provides them an opportunity they might never have otherwise. Being able to apply the academic skills they have already learned to a new art that produces a finished quilt, gives them not only a new skill, but the confidence to try something new.

Students participating in the Quilting Club develop a growth mind set, challenging themselves to take risks and make mistakes while applying their skills in a non academic environment.

The skills learned in Quilting Club directly transfer to the classroom, leading to the self confidence needed to approach more difficult academic tasks.
