Radical Readers Racing To Reach For A New Book

Help me give my students new types of books in the library like graphic novels and also introduce new and upcoming authors to them.

My Students

We are a small, rural school located in a town that borders an American Indian Reservation. We have about 260 students in our Pre K-6 building, which is linked to the high school as well. Being located in a small town and nearby reservation, there is a strong sense of family and community in our school as many students are related to one another as siblings, cousins, etc. My biggest hope for each day is that students will be at school as we have many attendance issues. Many students are switched between local schools due to parents moving around, and sometimes students won't attend for weeks at a time. Our students work hard; however, they are sometimes cut short by lack of materials or struggles due to home life.

Many students have basic life needs such as food or mental health issues that must be met before they can focus on their education.

We are at about 65.8% free breakfast and lunch which reflects many of the struggles my students and their families face at home. They work hard despite all of this, and I strive to support them in any way I can!

My Project

All the books in this grant where picked with students in mind. The students at the school were asked what types of books they wanted if we could get more and specific books. These were many of the books that the students picked. With the students wanting to read these books there will be an increased interest in books, leading to over time stronger readers and them wanting to read more!

Over the last decade the school has had a very limited budget that mainly was used to replace lost or damaged books, the students need new and updated books in the library to increase their reading ability and become stronger readers!

With these new types of books and new and upcoming authors, the students will read more and have an eye opening experience about books! Leading to stronger and better readers!
