This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a great cross-section of our suburban environment. I have many ethnic groups and several nationalities in my classroom. We have an above average low-income status with many in my class living in single-parent family homes.
About half of my boys qualify for reading services such as resource, tier 2 pull-out, and tier push-in.
I incorporate flexible seating to allow movement while learning and working.
All of my students have access to 1:1 technology with Chromebooks provided by our school district. I supply headphones for those who cannot afford them and I also keep a few pairs available as replacements.
My Project
Reading and Discussing Book Club (RAD) is an after-school book club for my struggling boy readers in 3rd grade, with books featuring multicultural males, solving problems, persevering, and social issues.
RAD Book Club will build confidence in reading and responding skills for my 3rd-grade boys by focusing on a book a week to read and discuss in a safe non-threatening small group of peers.
"Petit Pierre and the Floating Marsh" is a great book that will help students build their fluency and reinforce science content of landforms. " Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut" is a book that connects with boys' experiences and draws them into the joys of reading through personal connections.
Having a weekly literature discussion after each reading will build confidence in the boys by expressing their opinions, connections, and thoughts. Also, boys will get to keep these high-quality and thought provoking books to read again with their families and build their own home library.
