This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids are a motley crew. They come from homes that are not always ideal and their futures' do not always look so bright. But that is only half the story. My kids have all the raw material to become something special. They are bright, curious, energetic, and impressionable.
My job is to help them imagine the futures they could have if they work hard, plan ahead, and make better choices. Each unit of science covers some aspect of life on our planet. And throughout our year I incorporate how we can preserve our planet. Every one of us has a direct impact on the health of our planet and the diverse life that inhabits it.
I want to teach the kids a unit on solar energy and how its use can benefit the environment. Unfortunately, the costs to purchase these solar race cars are prohibitive. My kids learn best when they have something tangible.
Building these cars will not only grab the interest of my kids, but will teach them about design, construction, following directions, creating scientific investigations, the importance of taking care of the environment, and more. In the process, solar energy will not just be a abstract concept that seems easy. Students will see how harnessing this resource takes planning. What angles are ideal? What weather conditions must be present? Does mass inhibit use in mobile technology? Who else is seeing future scientist here?
Hands-on real world projects create dreams, and dreams create realities. And the future suddenly starts looking a bit brighter.
