Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a wonderful group of 5th grade students who are highly motivated and have a true passion for learning. They are my inspiration as they push me to think outside of the box to develop learning experiences to meet their varying interests and diverse needs.
My students represent a very mixed population both culturally and economically, and despite challenges, they always give their own personal best and push to succeed!
I teach at a Title I school where I am lucky enough to get to work with such dedicated and hard working students and partner with a group of supportive parents who share the common goal of a quality education for their children.
My Project
Students will be using the materials to help engage in at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity through running/walking experiences such as relay racing and mile runs.
This project was "kid-inspired" because many of my students have expressed interest in getting equipment that will allow them to record the steps and miles they have walked/run.
In addition, they always have to rely on me to record times. A countup clock and stopwatches will allow them to keep track of their walking/running times with accuracy.
Resources will be integrated into the classroom because each student will keep a notebook to track miles completed and times for their mile run. They will set goals and write weekly reflections on their progress. Students will have opportunities to share with their peers how participating in these types of activities contribute to the overall health and well-being of individuals.
The use of these materials will increase the overall health and activity level of my students by first and foremost getting them active! Not only will they learn running skills, but also the valuable part of what it means to work hard towards meeting a goal, encourage their peers, and be leaders in fitness and health. It is my hope that that being active today will lead them to a healthier and active future and a role model to others.
