My Project
Art is one of the most powerful tools we have for fostering empathy, representation, and cultural understanding—and our students deserve to see themselves reflected in the artists they study and the materials they use. This project is dedicated to promoting racial equality in the art classroom by providing books about artists of color, diverse drawing guides for students, and a wider range of skin tone paints to support more inclusive and representative artwork.
We hope to expand our school library with inspiring titles that highlight the lives and work of artists like Yayoi Kusama, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Faith Ringgold, and more—artists whose unique voices and cultural identities have reshaped the art world.
When students learn about artists from a variety of backgrounds, they begin to understand that creativity belongs to everyone—not just the names in traditional textbooks. Providing diverse drawing books and a fuller spectrum of skin tones in our paints also helps students feel empowered to create portraits and characters that reflect the real, diverse world they live in. It encourages authenticity, respect, and connection.
This year, our school is undergoing a major building expansion, and while the growth is exciting, it has unfortunately led to reduced budgets for elective programs like visual arts. I’ve been working hard to fill in the gaps, but resources like these—especially books and high-quality paints—are difficult to cover alone.
Your donation will help create a more inclusive, empowering art classroom where all students feel seen, inspired, and valued. Thank you for helping us honor the stories and contributions of artists of color and for making space for every student to express their voice through art. Your support means more than words can say.
