This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My Kindergarten students are majority students of color from East Oakland. Due to the pandemic, most of my students have never been to preschool and are experiencing school for the first time under stressful circumstances. Although they are brilliant, powerful, and come to school with a vast amount of cultural wealth, they are still in need of resources I am lacking in the classroom. My Project

Our school is creating an Ethnic Studies based curriculum and that means more books representative of our majority of black and brown student population. Having early literacy books that students can see themselves in is essential in a successful curriculum focused on racial and social justice and Ethnic Studies. The classroom library I selected includes books that will help students learn from each other and about themselves as well as provide opportunities for critical discussions on race, friendship, community and identity. Thanks in advance for your support in making this possible in my Kindergarten classroom.
