This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our class is looking to have copies of Of Mice and Men so that we can delve into racial justice and representation in Steinbeck's text. We are asking for copies to call our own, so that we can annotate in them and takes notes in the margins as we read. We are trying to be active readers, and a large part of that comes from having books that we can interact with. We need to annotate in order to explore, on the deepest levels, racial justice, of the lack thereof, in Of Mice and Men. Characters such as Crooks and Curley's wife will be a focus when we read this text, as their representation matters and Steinbeck does a masterful job at weaving them through this story and leaving the reader with so many questions and thoughts on racial justice and representation.

Representation is something we really need to bring to the forefront, especially right now, and these texts will help us do that.

Additionally, the ability to annotate while reading texts is often overlooked, but not here. We are eager to annotate in these texts as we explore the relationships between these characters and really dig deep into how and why they are included, and how and why they are treated the way they are.

John Steinbeck's text is so important to read today, and even more important to discuss today. By having each student have their own text, we will be better able to explore these characters and ideas together. Thank you for making this possible!
