My Students

Many of my students are from low-income families and receive free lunch. Our school is the only high school in our area and this year 100% of the students will receive free breakfast and lunch for the school year. Sometimes, eating a healthy, well-balanced meal happens only in school for many of them. Being able to grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs for them to take home and share with their families is something we have been wanting to do in class for a long time. We also have livestock to take care of that we use as learning tools in the classroom. Taking the livestock section one step further and harvesting them for food will teach the students even more about self-sustainability.

Sharing the bounty they raise in class with their families will solidify the teachings and experiences they have in class.

They will be able to share with others how they worked and harvested what they grew and raised then turn around and share with their families what we ate.

My Project

Our school has many different races and nationalities. That makes it a little easier to teach about racial equity in all mankind is equal regardless of race or color. In our class, we have Hawaiians, Japanese, Chinese, Filipinos, Micronesian, Mexican, Honduran, and many more countries represented. We thought that it would be fun to learn more about food from different cultures and how we all cook to feed and nourish our bodies, no matter where we are from originally.

Asian dumplings and Mexican tamales will teach my students that all races are different, but deep down we are all humans.

The students will prepare the dumplings and tamales and sit down to "break bread" with their classmates and partake of all their hard work. Learning about other cultures is always good to make our students more compassionate and accepting of others. I know this project will be both fun and delicious for my students, and for me!
