Race and Rights: Boston Teens Read All-American Boys

My students need the very timely novel All-American Boys by Jason Reynolds. It is a perfect companion to a "Teens and the Law" unit they'll study in my class.

My Students

My students are Boston Public school ninth graders. They come from various parts of the city, and their backgrounds are equally diverse--Cape Verdean, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Greek, Nigerian--but they are united this year by a common goal: to become more confident, fluent readers.

Since school opened, my students have been clamoring for good book titles.

They crave current books about issues they can relate to, books written by or about people who look like them, and books that make them think deeply. They do not shy away from dark topics, but I also know they like stories of resilient teens who overcome great challenges and hardships.

My Project

My students will learn about their rights, responsibilities and protections as teens under local and state laws. They'll research various aspects of the law, teach each other what they learned, and meet with lawyers to deepen their knowledge.

Reading All-American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely will give them a chance to engage in a timely conversation about race and justice and to think critically about issues our country faces right now in the criminal justice system.

This work of realistic fiction mirrors current events, raises tough questions, and most of all pushes students to think about what role they might play in helping to build a more just society.

Many of my students are disengaged with school. But this topic appeals to them; they can relate to it. I know of no other work of literature as timely as this one right now. This book has the power to engage both my reluctant readers and my eager readers.
