My students are starting the year choosing their own books for independent reading, but before too long I want to up the ante. If they're playing it safe reading all of one author, I want to open up the field of reading for them and get them to try something new. They will choose one of these eight books, join a "book club" of other students reading that book, and they will read together, talk about their books, make meaning from their observations and questions, write in response to the text, and build a deeper understanding of their chosen book. I have chosen these books for their rigor and literary merit but also because their subject matter is high interest for my particular set of students. Book clubs are a great way for my students to exercise choice and for me to nurture strong reading habits.
