My Project

Historical fiction novel "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry is a novel in middle school classrooms across the country. This is for good reason, as this text follows the fictional account of a young girl living during the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Denmark. The relatable characters and riveting plot have impacted countless readers.

Did you know that "Number the Stars" has recently been translated into Spanish?

I would like to provide a class set of this book to my 6th grade Native Language Arts class, which is a group of Spanish-speaking students who are recently arrived to the United States. In this class, students enhance and maintain their home language literacy skills, which can then be transferred to their English language learning.

By reading this novel in their native language, students will be able to master grade level standards. With this novel, I plan to implement instruction on inferencing, figurative language, characterization, and vocabulary. Students will also explore sociocultural and socio-emotional themes such as community, bravery, and friendship. Please help me provide my students with a class set of "Number the Stars" in Spanish!
