Quill's Budding Botanists: Growing Love for Plants in First Grade

Help me give my students an indoor garden with a mini greenhouse, ceramic pots, books and posters to create an amazing experience for students to learn about and grow their own plants.

My Project

My first graders are curious, energetic, and always ready to dig into a new learning adventure—literally! They come from diverse backgrounds, and many of them do not have access to nature-based learning experiences outside the classroom. Our school is a nurturing environment where we foster exploration, creativity, and a love of learning, even when resources are limited.

This project will bring hands-on science to life through a classroom botany unit.

With your support, we’ll create a mini indoor garden where students can plant seeds, observe growth, and explore the parts and needs of plants.

I’m requesting items such as small ceramic plant pots, an indoor garden center, spray bottles to water the plants, posters and basic nonfiction botany books to support our learning. These tools will allow each student to plant and care for their own seed, track its growth in a journal, and learn about the life cycle of a plant through observation and guided lessons.

Young children learn best through doing. By giving them the opportunity to plant and nurture their own seeds, they will gain a deeper understanding of how plants grow, what they need to survive, and why plants are important to our world.

This unit will also help build patience, responsibility, and observation skills. For many of my students, this may be their first experience growing something themselves—and the pride and excitement they feel will be unforgettable.

This botany study supports science standards while integrating reading, writing, and even math. Students will record data, write about their plants, read about plant life cycles, and make predictions and observations throughout the growing process.
