My Students
My sixth graders live in an area that is a pocket of poverty. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. The public library that was across the street closed several years ago. As a result, the majority of students do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.
All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch and many of them are the children of deployed military personnel.
Our school is not a Title One school but my students have needs that are not being met by our school. They are wonderful kids and they deserve a chance.
I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Our student population is racially diverse.
My Project
I am requesting a ream of cover stock, some dry erase markers, toner, binders and labels so that my students create, write and print their reports and illustrations. This year, my sixth graders are going to imagine and research how they will earn a living in the 21st century. They will research potential careers, life time earnings and speculate on the future of work. Their career choice is limited by what their imagination can come up with. Using their binders, students will gather their research and information. With the ink, markers and cardstock they will write and print their report and design a mini info poster to present it to the class. This combination of research, futuristic speculation and art project will help my students use all their problem solving skills.
I have 29 students who need supplies to ensure a high quality finished project.
They have limited access to technology at home and they need to print their reports.
Please consider helping my students. Today's students are tomorrow's future!
