In the band classroom, students learn self-discipline at the highest level. Their social skills, communication skills, self-concept, cooperative talents, and creative mind are all nurtured through their study of music. These life-skills will serve as an important foundation as they take on various responsibilities in their future. The band classroom is a place where all can feel safe and welcome.
Our high standards and expectations are balanced with meeting students where they are and growing through skill development.
My students are extremely enthusiastic and eager in their study of music. They love performing and making music together. Band students always support and encourage each other in everything we do.
My Project
During the pandemic, with school closures and quarantines, students often miss out on instruction and can fall behind. This problem can be exacerbated when students do not have instruments that are in good working condition. When an instrument needs repair (even if it is a simple fix), the student has to send it into the repair shop which can leave the student without an instrument for 1 to 2 weeks. During this period without an instrument or an instrument in disrepair, students are unable to achieve the Oklahoma learning standard M.PR.5: to perform expressively with appropriate interpretation and technical accuracy.
In order to alleviate this problem of missed instruction due to instrument disrepair, I would like to acquire two instrument repair kits.
With these repair kits, directors can do most quick and easy repairs in the very same day which allows students to continue to learn and perform. By being able to repair instruments, we are able to provide more students with a quality music education. A student’s musical growth in band relies a great deal on the condition of their instrument. Given that band is a teamwork activity, the success of one student is a success for all students involved.
It is important that our school offers arts education for our students. Whether a student is interested in pursuing a career in the arts or not, art and music classes give students an opportunity to think creatively—which is a skill that becomes more and more important in our fast-changing world and economy.
