This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love having new experiences. They love retelling the stories they have heard or read. Possessing the ability to hear a familiar story in another language and retell it in English would be a highly prized talent among my students, not to mention the boost in reading comprehension.
Most of my students are from low income households.
Some are homeless. Many students speak English as a second language or don't have an opportunity to speak academic language at home. For them, our school is a haven of communication opportunities. Teachers strive to provide numerous avenues for students to demonstrate and share what they have learned.
Our school productions and academic fairs provide the children with the academic outlet they need to excel in school and become life long learners. Vox Populi, the Latin Club at our school will help students develop their fluency, grammar and comprehension skills. The Vox Populi theater activities provide students with opportunities to share their finely honed skills with their fellow students.
My Project
The Latin text, literature and reference books will be, for my students, the first introduction to learning a foreign language for the sheer joy of acquiring new knowledge. Roman Mythology will help develop their imaginations and teach them the importance written and oral communication. Reading the stories, writing short plays for the class and preforming them for their peers will build confidence as well as academic skills. Students will be encouraged to explore history, art and performance art associated with Roman culture and language. These experiences will light a lamp for learning and inspire students to seek knowledge, to achieve academic excellence, strive for personal improvement and to have fun.
Learning Latin will arm students with powerful tools for English language acquisition.
Latin grammar is the foundation for English grammar as well as the Romance languages Spanish, French and Italian. The Latin books are the path to those tools.
Students are required to have superior oral and written communication skills before progressing to the next phase of their academic careers. Reading, writing and performing Latin projects will help move them to the next phase.
